Scallop guide

Can dogs eat scallops?

Plain scallops, kept small and kept simple. What to leave out, what the sources say, and what is in our bag.

Updated

A plain, fully cooked scallop with nothing on it is the version to think about, in a small portion, if your veterinarian is comfortable with shellfish for your dog. A scallop from a restaurant plate is usually the opposite: butter, garlic, salt, oil and sometimes breading. One caveat up front: we did not find a dog-specific scallop page from the AKC, VCA or ASPCA, so the points below come from their general guidance on shellfish, seasoning and treats, and we say so each time. Jump to our bag.

What to leave off the scallop

The AKC advises that if you feed a dog any human food, you skip added seasonings, salt, sugar, oil and butter, and that you avoid meat with excessive salt, seasonings, onions or garlic (AKC, human foods dogs can and cannot eat, opened 2026-10-16). The ASPCA names garlic and onions as foods that can irritate the gut and damage red blood cells, and warns that too much salt can cause thirst, vomiting and, at the far end, seizures (ASPCA, people foods to avoid, opened 2026-10-16). Scallop dishes tend to be made with exactly those things.

That makes the checklist short:

  1. No butter, oil or sauce.
  2. No garlic or onion, including garlic butter and "seasoned" mixes.
  3. No breading or frying.
  4. Go easy on salt, including salted water and brined scallops.

Raw or cooked?

For shellfish cooked at home, the AKC's shrimp article says raw shellfish carry harmful pathogens and that cooking avoids them (AKC, Can Dogs Eat Shrimp?, updated February 2025, opened 2026-10-16). It is written about shrimp, and we are applying the same caution to scallops from the fish counter. Our scallops are raw when they go into the freeze dryer, so this is a raw product, and we do not claim freeze-drying makes it risk free. Handle the scallops as raw pet food and wash your hands afterward. The FDA's advice for raw pet food, which applies to this bag, is a soap-and-water hand wash of at least 20 seconds and a clean and disinfect of counters, bowls and tools the food touched (FDA, Get the Facts! Raw Pet Food Diets can be Dangerous to You and Your Pet, 2018, opened 2026-10-16).

Shells and size

Our bag's only ingredient is scallops, and the listing does not mention shells. For a shell from your own kitchen, borrow the AKC's reasoning on shrimp shells, which it calls a choking and obstruction risk, and keep shells away from your dog. Our listing says the pieces run small. Break a piece in two for a small dog and stay nearby.

Shellfish on the label

Scallops are mollusks, which count as shellfish. VCA Hospitals describes a food allergy as the immune system overreacting to a food, usually a protein, and says that for a dog with food allergies it is critical to pick treats without the suspected allergen (VCA, Food Allergies in Dogs, 2022; VCA, Dog Treats, both opened 2026-10-16). We make no medical claims. If your veterinarian has set a diet for your dog, check with them before a new protein joins the rotation.

Our freeze-dried scallops

The ingredient list is one word, scallops, with nothing added: no butter, no garlic. Because every piece is a single whole scallop, no two look quite alike, and the bag is filled to a weight rather than a count. We score the crunch 4 of 5. Adult dogs of all sizes are listed, and the same bag is listed for cats.

Scallops are shellfish, so a bag with this ingredient is not for a dog that cannot have it.

Ways to serve

  • A reward. Small pieces make quick rewards. We give training value a middle score, 3 of 5.
  • A topper. Crumble a piece over the meal.
  • On the road. Freeze-dried and shelf stable, the bag weighs next to nothing and needs no ice.

On calories, VCA says up to about 10 percent of a dog's day can come from treats, and it advises introducing new things slowly, one at a time (VCA, Dog Treats). Treats are for intermittent or supplemental feeding, not a complete diet. Keep fresh water out. Once opened, seal the bag again and keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sun.

More from the shellfish shelf

Another mollusk with a plain one-ingredient bag is blue-lipped mussels. Squid, clams and a five-ingredient medley are on the seafood for dogs page. Scallops are also one of the four bags in the Exotic Collection Box.

Questions about scallops for dogs

Can dogs eat cooked scallops?

Plain, fully cooked and unseasoned is the only version worth considering, and only in small portions. The AKC advises skipping salt, seasonings, oil and butter on any human food. Check with your veterinarian first.

Can dogs eat raw scallops?

The AKC says raw shellfish carry harmful pathogens (in its shrimp article), so a raw scallop from the fish counter is not one we would hand over. Our scallops are also raw before freeze-drying, so handle the bag as raw pet food and wash your hands after touching it.

Are the freeze-dried scallops raw or cooked?

Raw. The scallops are raw when they go into the freeze dryer, with nothing added, so handle them as raw pet food.

How many pieces come in a bag?

The bag is sold by weight, 2 oz, so the piece count depends on how big each scallop is.

Can cats have them?

Yes, our listing sells this one bag for both dogs and cats. If your cat is on a veterinary diet, check with your veterinarian.

Do they need a fridge?

No. They are shelf stable, so a sealed bag in a cupboard is fine.
