Light, crunchy and still a scallop: the close look

Updated

What do freeze dried scallops look like? Still plainly scallops. Each piece is a whole scallop, freeze dried raw, and what comes out is light and crunchy. No two match: shape, color and size change from one piece to the next. The pieces run small, and the crunch rates 4 of 5 on our scorecard.

What does a scallop look like out of the bag?

Open the bag and you are looking at scallops, whole ones, with the freeze drying done. By the listing's description, drying leaves a light, crunchy piece that you would still recognize as a scallop, and that is a fair summary of what lands in your hand.

Nothing here is a chip, a nugget or a pressed shape. A whole scallop treat keeps whatever form the scallop had, which is why a bag does not look uniform. Set a few pieces side by side on the counter and you will see it right away.

The pieces run small. That is the other size word the listing uses, alongside the fact that no two pieces match.

Why do shape and color change from piece to piece?

Because every piece is its own scallop. By the listing, no two pieces share a shape, a color or a size, and it gives one cause for all three: each one is a whole scallop, and whole scallops differ.

We are not going to name colors. The listing says only that color varies, and a list of shades would be our invention. If one piece looks different from its neighbor, that is the ordinary state of the bag.

Think of a bin of used parts pulled from one engine. Same family, never identical. That is the only car comparison you are getting on this page.

How light and crunchy is a piece?

Light and crunchy are the two words the listing uses, and the scorecard backs the second one: crunch 4 of 5. Training value is 3 of 5. Both numbers are our own scoring, not a lab result.

The pieces run small, which matters if you plan to use them as rewards. Our scallops for dog training page goes into small pieces as rewards. For a topper, the listing says a piece can be broken apart or crumbled over a meal.

The listing says nothing more about texture, such as how a piece feels once it meets water or a tongue. So we stick to what is written: light, crunchy and small.

Why does the piece count change from bag to bag?

The bag is packed by weight, not by count. Scallops come in different sizes, so the number of pieces changes with the sizes that go in. Two bags can hold different numbers of pieces, and neither one is wrong.

If you count pieces for a feeding routine, count what is in your own bag and expect the next one to differ. We do not print a piece count anywhere, because there is no single number that would be true. Our scallops for dogs page has the rest of the label facts in one place.

One ingredient, scallops, freeze dried raw. Whole pieces, so no two match.

What is left off the scallop?

Everything a restaurant scallop usually gets. The ingredient line is one word, and the listing spells out what is not there.

  • No butter
  • No garlic
  • No additives
  • One ingredient: scallops

That short list also explains the look. There is no coating, seasoning or breading on the surface, so what you see is the scallop itself.

Scallops are mollusks, which count as shellfish, so the bag is not for a dog that cannot have shellfish. Treats are for intermittent or supplemental feeding, not a complete diet, and your veterinarian is the one to ask about shellfish for your own dog. The rest of our reading is on the guides hub.

Questions

Are freeze-dried scallops cooked?

No. The scallops are freeze dried raw, with nothing added. Because they are raw, the FDA says to wash your hands after handling raw pet food and to clean and disinfect what it touched (FDA, raw pet food diets, opened 2026-10-16).

Is there a shell on the scallop?

The listing does not mention shells either way, so we have nothing to say about them. What the listing does say is that each piece is a whole scallop and that the only ingredient is scallops. If shells matter to your decision, ask us before you order.

Why does the bag not list a piece count?

Because the bag is packed by weight. Scallops differ in size, so the count changes from bag to bag, and any single printed number would be wrong for most bags. Look at the pieces when you open yours and judge by those.

Do freeze-dried scallops smell?

Our word for the scallops is a weak fish smell. The scallop listing does not cover smell, so that line is ours. Our page on low smell dog treats puts it next to the rest of the range.

Can a cat have a small piece?

Cats are on the listing too, from the same bag. For a cat, the listing suggests crumbling a piece over the meal or choosing a small one, and the pieces run small to begin with. No cat portion is printed, so the amount is a question for your veterinarian.

Where do the scallops come from?

They are imported shellfish, freeze dried raw in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. We do not have more detail than that, such as which scallop it is or how it was caught, and we would rather leave it out than make something up.
