Why dogs go for it

A mussel is small, light and smells of the sea, and a dog treats it as a find rather than a biscuit. It is the whole mussel in one piece, so hand one over as a reward or crumble it over dinner. Mussels are rich, so one or two at a time is the usual pace.

Good to know

Mussels are mollusks, which counts as shellfish, so if anyone in your house steers clear of shellfish, treat the bag the same way. The mussels are blanched before freeze drying; wash your hands after handling them, as with any pet treat. Treats are for intermittent or supplemental feeding, not a complete diet; keep fresh water available and stay nearby while your dog eats. The bag is listed for adult dogs of all sizes and for cats. Questions

Are these green-lipped mussels?

No. Ours are blue mussels, a different species. We say so on the bag page because the two get mixed up.

How many mussels are in a bag?

We sell them by weight, 2 ounces a bag, and we do not count pieces. Whole mussels vary in size.

Are they raw?

No. The mussels are blanched, then freeze dried. Nothing else is added.

Can my cat have them?

Yes. The bag is listed for dogs and cats. For a cat, break a mussel up or crumble it over food.

How do I store them?

Reseal the bag after opening and keep it in a cool, dry place.
