An older dog and a bag of scallops: how to serve
Updated
Scallops for senior dogs are a serving question, not a promise. Our bag is listed for adult dogs of all sizes, and the label asks you to adjust the amount to pet size, age and activity. The listing also offers breaking a scallop apart or crumbling it over the bowl as a topper. Ask your vet first.
What does the scallop label say about age?
It says very little, and that is worth knowing before you buy. The listing names adult dogs of all sizes. There is no separate senior line, no older-dog serving size and no age cutoff. What the feeding line does give is a general instruction: adjust the amount to the size, age and activity of the pet, and supervise while the treat is eaten.
We are leaving that line exactly as printed. It is the label's wording, not a senior feeding plan, and we are not going to stretch it into one. How much of a scallop suits a particular older dog is a question for the person who knows that dog's chart.
The label adds one more plain line: fresh water should always be available.
How crunchy is a freeze-dried scallop?
Our scorecard puts the crunch at 4 of 5. The listing also says the pieces run small, since every piece is a whole scallop and scallops vary in size.
That is all we have, and we would rather say so than guess. We have no information on how a crunch of that level sits with any one dog's mouth, and we make no claim about chewing. If your dog has had trouble with hard treats, put that on the list for your veterinarian.
How do you crumble a scallop over a meal?
The listing suggests it directly: break one apart or crumble it over the bowl.
- Take one scallop out of the bag with dry hands.
- Hold it over the bowl and break it apart.
- Crumble the pieces over the regular meal.
- Reseal the bag and put it back in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
The scallops are not meant to replace the meal. They go on top of it, so the bowl looks the way it always does with a little extra on it. Because every piece is different, you will see different amounts of crumb from one scallop to the next. The bag is packed by weight, not by count, so the number of pieces in your bag is not fixed either.
How does a scallop fit an older dog's treat day?
Think of it as one small item among whatever else the dog gets. By VCA Hospitals' count, treats can be around 10 percent of the calories a dog takes in each day, with new foods introduced singly (VCA, Dog Treats, opened 2026-10-16). That is a dog guideline, and it does not tell you what a given scallop adds up to for your dog.
Treats are for occasional or extra feeding, not a complete diet, and that goes for a crumbled scallop as much as a biscuit. So the scallop shares the day with the regular food, other treats and anything else that gets handed over.
A new treat is a new thing. If your older dog has not eaten shellfish before, it goes in by itself, as the only new thing in the bowl. Watch how the dog does while you supervise, and keep fresh water down.
What should you ask the vet before a raw shellfish treat?
Scallops are mollusks, so they count as shellfish, and ours are freeze dried raw. That is the reason for the vet call, and the useful part is knowing what to ask. A short list works.
- Is shellfish on the table for this dog at all?
- If so, how much, and how often?
- Does anything about the dog's current food or plan change the answer?
Because the scallops are raw, hand washing matters too. The FDA, raw pet food diets page lists two steps for raw pet food: clean hands afterward, then cleaning and disinfecting every surface it touched.
Our scallops for dogs page has the full ingredient line and label facts, and the guides hub lists the rest.
Questions
Are scallops listed for senior dogs?
Not by name. The listing says adult dogs of all sizes and has no senior line. The label's general instruction is to adjust the amount to pet size, age and activity. Anything more specific about an older dog is something to settle with your veterinarian rather than from the bag.
Can I soak a scallop to soften it?
The scallop listing gives no soaking step, so we do not offer one. Crumbling is the method it describes. The quail egg listing is the one that mentions an optional soak, and our quail eggs for senior dogs page covers that.
Are the scallops raw?
Yes. They are freeze dried raw, with scallops as the only ingredient and no butter, garlic or additives. Treat the bag as raw pet food: dry hands going in, then a wash afterward, and a wipe of anything the pieces touched while you crumbled them.
Is a crumbled scallop still a treat?
Yes. Crumbling changes the size of the pieces, not what the food is. It is still a treat or meal topper, so the regular food stays the main event and the scallop sits on top of it.
My older dog eats a vet diet. Can scallops go on top?
Ask your veterinarian before the first piece. A dog on a prescribed diet has a plan, and a topper is a change to that plan. Your vet knows the dog, and we do not, so that call is theirs and not ours or the bag's.
Can an older cat have scallops?
The same bag is listed for cats. For a cat, the listing's two options are a piece crumbled over the food or a small piece served as it is. It gives no cat portion and no age guidance, and the dog sources above are for dogs only, so ask your veterinarian about an older cat.
