Keeping an open bag of raw scallops dry and dark

Updated

How to store freeze dried scallops comes down to one line from the label: once the bag is open, reseal it and keep it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. The listing calls the scallops shelf stable, so the fridge is not part of the routine. They are freeze dried raw, so wash your hands afterward.

What does the scallop label say once the bag is open?

The storage line on our scallop bag is a single sentence. Reseal the bag after opening, then keep it somewhere cool and dry where the sun does not reach it. That is the whole instruction. There is no fridge step. The bag does carry a best-by date one year from production, and for an opened bag we add our own suggestion of 30 days.

The sunlight part is the easiest one to skim past. The label does not say why it asks, so we do not guess at a reason. We follow it the way a shop follows a torque spec, without arguing.

Scallops after opening need one new habit, and it is the seal. Press it closed each time your hand comes out of the bag, not once when you are finished for the day.

Where in the house does a scallop bag belong?

Storing scallops away from sunlight rules out the windowsill and the bright end of the counter. The label asks for dry, which rules out the shelf above the kettle and the spot beside the sink. What is left is most of the kitchen, so this is an easy ask.

  1. A closed cupboard or a drawer, not an open shelf.
  2. Away from any window that gets direct sun during the day.
  3. Away from the sink and the kettle, where steam collects.
  4. Bag resealed end to end before it goes back.

If the cupboard you pick already holds the dog's kibble, that works. The label asks only for cool, dry and out of the sun, and a cupboard shelf gives you all three.

Do freeze-dried scallops need the fridge?

Do freeze dried scallops need to be refrigerated is the first question an open bag raises, and the listing answers it. It describes the scallops as light and shelf stable, and its storage line names a cool, dry place rather than a fridge. A cupboard meets that wording. A refrigerator is not what the label asks for.

The listing adds, almost in passing, that a bag can come along to a show weekend without a cooler. We mention it only because it makes the same point from the other direction: no cold storage is called for. Our scallops for dogs page covers the rest of the label; this page stays on the bag and the cupboard.

How do you handle raw scallops in the kitchen?

Handling raw freeze dried scallops is the part of storage that happens outside the bag. The scallops go into the freeze dryer raw, and drying does not turn them into a cooked product, so the bag is handled as raw pet food. The FDA, raw pet food diets page gives the routine in two steps: wash your hands after handling raw pet food, then clean and disinfect whatever the food touched (opened 2026-10-16).

At home that is a wash at the sink after you hand a piece over, and a wipe of the counter if you broke one up on it. Take pieces out with dry hands, so the bag stays as dry as the label asks. Our mussels are a different case, blanched before freeze drying rather than raw, and the mussels vs scallops page sets the two labels next to each other.

One ingredient, scallops, freeze dried raw and packed by weight, with the label's own storage line: reseal, cool, dry, out of the sun.

How do you split one bag between a dog and a cat?

Dogs and cats eat from this same bag, so a house with both needs one cupboard spot, not two. For the cat, the listing offers a crumbled piece over a meal, or a small piece picked out of the bag. For the dog, the pieces already run small, and the label lists adult dogs of all sizes. Either way the bag goes back resealed between servings.

Use dry hands when you reach in. These scallops are a treat or a topper, not a complete diet, so they ride along with the regular food. If either animal is on a plan from the clinic, the veterinarian hears about the scallops first. The rest of our storage and feeding pages are on the guides hub.

Questions

Can I freeze scallops?

The label has no freezer step, so we have none to pass along. What it asks is a sealed bag kept cool, dry and out of sunlight, and the instruction stops there. If you put the bag in the freezer anyway, that is your choice; we have nothing on how the pieces come out.

How long does an open bag keep?

Plan on 30 days from opening; that is our guidance, separate from the label. The label gives you the habit: reseal after every opening and keep the bag cool, dry and away from sun. A sealed bag runs to its printed best-by date.

Why are there small pieces at the bottom of the bag?

The scallop listing says the pieces run small. The bag is also packed by weight rather than by count, so the number of pieces differs from bag to bag as the scallops differ in size. Small pieces can go over a meal, which the listing offers as a topper.

Are freeze-dried scallops cooked?

No. The scallops are raw when they go in to be freeze dried, and they come out raw and dry. Nothing is added and nothing is cooked: the ingredient line is scallops and it stops there. Treat the bag as raw pet food, which is why the hand wash sits inside the storage routine.

Is a closed cupboard enough?

Yes. Cool, dry and away from sunlight is the whole ask, and a closed cupboard away from the sink and the stove meets every word of it. The bag does the rest as long as the seal is pressed shut. Neither a fridge nor a freezer is called for on the label.

Do I need to wash my hands after a dry scallop?

Yes. A dry scallop is still a raw shellfish. Hand washing after raw pet food, plus cleaning and disinfecting whatever it touched, is the routine on the FDA, raw pet food diets page (opened 2026-10-16). Crumbs count the same as whole pieces.
