Dogs and cats
One shellfish bag, a dog and a cat in the same house
Updated
Can cats and dogs share shellfish treats? Four of our bags are sold for both, since the octopus, scallop, mussel and shrimp listings each name a dog and a cat. The cat gets small pieces, after a word with its veterinarian. Our frog legs and the Exotic Collection Box stay dog products.
Which of our shellfish bags are sold for both a dog and a cat?
Four of them. Each of these listings names both animals, and the table sets out what each one says. The last column is our own statement, not the listing's.
| Bag | Listing, for dogs | Listing, for cats | Our statement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Octopus | Adult dogs of all sizes, whole or broken up | One piece, whole or crumbled over food | Raw |
| Scallops | Adult dogs of all sizes | Same bag for cats | Raw |
| Mussels | Adult dogs of all sizes, one or two at once for most | Same bag for cats | Blanched |
| Shrimp | Adult dogs of all sizes | Made for cats as much as for dogs | Raw |
Octopus is the one listing with a cat serving line of its own. For the other three, the cat simply shares the dog's bag. The rest of the range, including the bags that are not for cats, is gathered on our novel protein treats page.
How do you size one bag for two very different mouths?
By the piece. The dog's pieces can be whole or broken, as each listing allows. The cat's pieces should be small, which is our suggestion rather than a listing line, and the cat's piece should be broken on its own, apart from the dog's.
Two listings help with the sizing. The scallops are described as running small. The mussel page wants the count kept low, with its one or two at a time aimed at dogs and no count at all for a cat. For the octopus, the listing says size differs from one octopus to the next, so check each piece before it reaches the cat's dish. The job is the one a tire shop has: one catalog, a different fit for each wheel.
Both animals get fresh water down, and both get supervised, as the listings ask. Think of every one of these as a treat or a topper on top of regular meals, for the dog and for the cat. For piece-by-piece cat detail on one bag, can cats eat octopus goes further than this page does.
What does a raw bag ask of you with two bowls in the kitchen?
Our statement on the octopus, scallops and shrimp is freeze-dried raw. The mussels are blanched, so we attach no raw handling line to them. For the raw three, the FDA, raw pet food diets page (opened 2026-10-16) tells you to wash your hands and then clean whatever the raw food touched.
Of the four listings, only the shrimp one carries a washing line of its own: it tells you to wash your hands once you have handled it. For octopus and scallops the FDA page is our source. Nothing here says more than that, and we will not invent a routine on top of it.
How does one open bag keep in a two-pet home?
The same way for all four: close it up after each serving and let it live somewhere cool and dry. A line about sunlight comes from the scallop listing alone. The octopus, scallop and mussel listings also call their bags shelf stable. The reseal line applies at every opening, whoever the bag is open for.
The dates are ours. Every bag carries a printed best-by date, fixed by us at 1 year from production. After opening, we ask for use within 30 days, and those days run from the day you opened it, however many animals eat from it. How long exotic dog treats last holds the rule for every bag.
Questions
Can frog legs go to the cat too?
No. The frog legs listing names medium and large adult dogs only, with no line for cats. We keep that bag a dog product, so it is not among the four shared bags in the table.
Is the Exotic Collection Box for a cat?
The box is listed as a dog product, so we do not suggest it for a cat. We are not ruling on the bags inside it here. Each of those bags names its own animals on its own listing.
Does the cat need its own bag?
No. Each of the four listings describes one bag for both animals. Reseal it between servings and store it cool and dry; the same bag serves the dog and the cat.
Can a kitten share the bag?
None of our listings mentions kittens, so we give no kitten line and no amount. The veterinarian line at the top of this page is the only guidance we offer here, and we add nothing to it.
Which of the four smells the strongest?
On the octopus page, the store's scorecard rates the smell strong. Our own description of the scallops and mussels is a weak fish smell. We have not described the shrimp, so we leave it out of any ranking.
Is shrimp one of the shared bags?
Yes. The shrimp listing says it is made for cats as much as for dogs, so the cat gets small pieces, as with the other three. The table above holds the rest of what that listing says.
