Octopus for cats: one piece, whole or crumbled

Updated

Our baby octopus bag lists cats as well as dogs, so a cat can eat a piece of it the way the label describes: one piece, whole or crumbled over food. Octopus from a kitchen or a restaurant is a different food, usually seasoned or marinated, and the bag's answer does not stretch to cover it.

What does the octopus bag say about cats?

The bag lists two animals. For dogs, the label says feed it whole or broken up, and it covers adult dogs of all sizes. For cats, the line is shorter: one piece, whole or crumbled over food. The ingredient list is one item, baby octopus, with no grains, fillers or dyes, and each piece is a whole small octopus with its tentacles still on.

That is all the bag says about cats. Our own suggestion is small pieces, with your vet's say on how much. The label calls the bag a treat or meal topper, not a complete and balanced diet, and asks for fresh water and for you to supervise while your animal eats. It is freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania and includes imported ingredients. If you came here for can cats have octopus in one line, that was it.

How big a piece of octopus suits a cat?

The label's own word, crumbled, points the way. Pieces vary in size because each one is a separate animal, so pick a smaller piece for a cat or break a larger one up before it reaches the bowl. Crumbled over food is the simplest route. It lands on the meal, and the cat decides how much interest to take.

Whole is the other option the label gives. If you go that way, stay in the room while the cat works on it, which is the label's supervision line and not an extra rule of ours. The store's scorecard puts crunch at 4 of 5, so this is a firm piece rather than a soft one, which is worth knowing before you choose between whole and crumbled for octopus for cats.

Is kitchen or restaurant octopus the same thing?

No, and this is where much of the question lives. The octopus behind a search for can cats eat octopus is often on a plate rather than in a treat bag: grilled, pickled or packed in oil. Kitchen octopus can carry a marinade, garlic or onion, and salt. The ASPCA lists garlic and onions among the people foods to keep from pets and puts too much salt on the same list (ASPCA, people foods to avoid, opened 2026-10-16).

Our bag has none of that, because octopus is the only thing in it. The octopus is freeze-dried raw, so handle it as you would raw seafood and wash up afterward. A plate from a restaurant is a different food, and the label on our bag has nothing to say about it.

How should you handle octopus around a cat?

Like any seafood. Wash your hands after you hand a piece over or crumble one, and wipe the spot where the crumbling happened. The listing calls the smell strong, as seafood tends to be, and that is the listing's word rather than ours. What a cat makes of the smell is between you and the cat, and we make no promises either way.

The bag asks you to supervise while feeding and to keep fresh water out. Reseal it between uses and keep it cool and dry. It is light and shelf stable, so the refrigerator is not involved, and a bag can sit in a cabinet next to the cat food rather than next to the milk.

Can a dog and a cat share one bag?

Yes, and that is how the bag is sold. The dog's line is whole or broken up, for adult dogs of all sizes; the cat's line is one piece, whole or crumbled. Same octopus, two serving sizes, so one bag covers both animals. The dog gets the bigger piece and the cat gets the crumbs, which is roughly how the garage works as well.

The dog side of the story, with the AKC and VCA sources behind it, is on the octopus for dogs page. Octopus also turns up as one of five ingredients in Captain's Catch, the other seafood treat for cats and dogs that contains it, and the seafood for dogs page covers that bag. Questions

Can kittens have octopus?

The listing says cats and gives no kitten line, so we have nothing to pass along about kittens and will not make something up. That question belongs to the clinic that knows the kitten. If the answer there is yes, the label's cat line still applies: one piece, whole or crumbled over food, with you in the room.

Does freeze-dried octopus smell strong?

Yes. The listing says so in plain words, and it is a seafood smell. Expect to notice it when the bag opens and to carry it on your fingers until you wash them. We make no claims about what any cat thinks of the smell; that part is between you and the cat, and cats are not known for sharing their reasoning.

How many calories are in octopus?

The label lists 2,235 kcal ME per kg, which it gives as about 63.4 kcal per ounce, and both figures are printed on the bag. There is no per-piece number, because pieces vary in size, so we do not offer one. For a cat, the label's serving line is one piece, and that is the number to work from.

Can a cat eat the tentacles?

The tentacles are the octopus. Each piece is a whole baby octopus with its tentacles intact, so there is no tentacle-free version of this bag. For a cat, crumble the piece as the label suggests and the tentacles come along in small bits. If you serve a piece whole, stay in the room, which is the label's supervision line.

What if my cat eats a veterinary diet?

Then ask your veterinarian before adding octopus or any other treat, since a diet set by a clinic usually comes with rules about what else goes in the bowl. Our bag is a treat, and a vet plan outranks it. We can tell you what the label says; we cannot tell you how it fits a plan we have not seen.

Is octopus in any other bag?

Yes, two. Captain's Catch is a five-ingredient seafood medley of squid, octopus, shrimp, clam and mussel, sold for dogs and cats, and it is not a single ingredient treat. The Exotic Collection Box holds four bags including the baby octopus, but it is put together for dogs, and the frog legs in it are listed for dogs only.
