What each bag is

Every bag is imported shellfish, freeze dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Four are a single ingredient. The fifth is a mix.

Captain's Catch holds squid, octopus, shrimp, clam and mussel. It is not a single ingredient treat, and it has no fish in it. Pieces vary a lot in size, shape and texture.

Shrimp is shrimp only, raw before freeze drying.

Scallops are raw before freeze drying and packed by weight, so the piece count changes from bag to bag. The pieces run small.

Mussels are blue mussels, blanched before freeze drying, so they are not raw. They are not green lipped mussels.

Octopus is baby octopus with the tentacles intact, freeze dried raw.

Our listings give the four single ingredient bags a crunch score of 4 out of 5. That is our own scorecard, not a lab result.

Which one to try first

If you are not sure, start with a single ingredient bag, so you know exactly what your dog just ate. Which exotic dog treat to try first sorts all seven of our bags by piece size, crunch and raw handling. Captain's Catch makes more sense once you know your dog takes to shellfish, since it has five in one bag.

Want a few proteins at once? The Exotic Collection Box holds four single ingredient bags. For the long answers on one shellfish at a time, see shrimp, scallops, mussels and octopus.

Shellfish and your dog

Shellfish may be new to your dog, so introduce a bag the way you would any new treat: one piece, broken small, and watch how your dog does. Raw seafood needs ordinary kitchen care, so wash your hands after handling the shrimp, scallop and octopus pieces. If a veterinarian manages what your dog eats, check with them before the first bag. The full answer on shellfish is in can dogs eat shellfish.

Storing an open bag

Reseal the bag after each use and keep it cool, dry and well sealed. The best by date is printed on the bag, one year from production, and an opened bag is best used within 30 days. The octopus, scallop and mussel bags are shelf stable, so none of them needs the refrigerator.

Questions about seafood dog treats

Are these seafood treats raw?

It depends on the bag. Shrimp, scallops and octopus are raw before freeze drying. Mussels are blanched first, so they are not raw. For Captain's Catch we do not state how the five are prepared.

Can a dog that reacts to fish have shellfish?

We cannot say, and we make no promise either way. If your dog has reacted to fish or any other seafood before, talk to your veterinarian before the first piece.

What goes into the Captain's Catch bag?

Five ingredients, listed as squid first, then octopus, shrimp, clam and mussel. There is no fish in it, and no grains, fillers or dyes. It contains both crustaceans and mollusks.

Do seafood dog treats smell?

Our scallops and mussels have a weak fish smell. The octopus has a strong one, by its listing. We have no smell note for the shrimp or Captain's Catch.

How long does a bag last once opened?

Plan to use an opened bag within 30 days, resealed and stored cool and dry. Unopened, the best by date is printed on the bag, one year from production.
